New Delhi: The Indian Army’s Assam Regiment has won a gold medal at Exercise Cambrian Patrol 2026 in Wales, United Kingdom, after completing a British army hosted assessment of military field skills. The regiment was among 10 patrols awarded gold in an event involving more than 100 teams, according to the Indian Army.
In a post on X on Tuesday, the Indian Army announced the achievement with the words “JAI SE VIJAY. Forged in Grit. Crowned in Gold.” The Army said the exercise was conducted from October 2 to 12 in Wales and credited the contingent’s endurance, tactical proficiency and teamwork for its performance. The British army recorded 140 patrol entries for the 2026 edition, including 35 international teams and two combined British-international patrols, making it the largest edition since the exercise began in 1959.
Hosted by Headquarters 160th (Welsh) Brigade, the annual exercise sends patrols, generally comprising eight soldiers, across up to 40 miles of mountainous terrain over roughly 48 hours. Along the way, teams are assessed on navigation, reconnaissance, casualty evacuation, radio communications, obstacle crossings and decisions made under pressure.
The 2026 event also incorporated modern battlefield challenges, including drone surveillance, minefield navigation and simulated chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear threats. Soldiers had to gather and report intelligence while maintaining concealment and coordination despite physical fatigue.
Under the British Army’s published rules, a gold award requires at least 75 per cent of the available points overall and no less than 65 per cent in any assessed task. Gold is therefore an assessment grade earned by meeting multiple standards, not a prize reserved for a single first-place finisher.
Major Darren Pridmore, the officer commanding the exercise, described it as “a demanding assessment of leadership, resilience, tactical judgment and teamwork under pressure”.
Raised on June 15, 1941, the Assam Regiment is an infantry regiment with roots in India’s northeast. It earned six battle honours during World War II, according to defence ministry records.
The latest award adds to previous Indian successes at Cambrian Patrol. In 2021, a team from 4/5 Gorkha Rifles (Frontier Force) won gold in an edition involving 96 patrols, including 17 international teams.
The Assam Regiment’s result reflects its performance in a demanding international training assessment, where the emphasis is on sustained small-unit leadership and practical soldiering skills rather than an operational combat outcome.
