External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has embarked on a three-nation tour to Jamaica, Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago from Saturday, (May 2, 2026) to Sunday (May 10, 2026), signalling India’s renewed diplomatic push in the Caribbean region. EAM Jaishankar’s latest visit underscores India’s close historical and cultural ties, particularly due to the presence of Girmitiya communities.
Before starting his official visit to the three Caribbean nations, EAM Jaishankar made a brief stopover in Zurich on Saturday while en route to the Caribbean.
“Hon’ble EAM S Jaishankar was extended a hearty welcome at Zurich Airport, Switzerland, en route to his official visit to Caribbean countries, by Anoop Dhingra, Min (Com),” the Embassy of India in Switzerland and Liechtenstein said in a post on X. The stopover marked the beginning of a diplomatically significant tour spanning multiple regions.
What are the key objectives of Jaishankar’s 3-nation tour?
According to the MEA, Jaishankar will engage with leadership across the three countries and discuss a wide range of issues.
“During the visit, EAM will meet with the leadership of the three countries and hold discussions with his counterparts covering the entire gamut of bilateral relations as well as regional and global issues of mutual interest,” the ministry said. His visit is aimed at sustaining political engagement and expanding cooperation across sectors.
Which areas of cooperation are likely to be prioritised?
Discussions are expected to cover bilateral trade and economic partnerships, development cooperation initiatives, regional and global geopolitical issues, South-South cooperation frameworks.
The MEA emphasised that the visit reflects a shared commitment to South-South cooperation and development, a key pillar of India’s global outreach strategy.
How important is the Indian diaspora in this engagement?
The Caribbean nations on Jaishankar’s itinerary have large populations of Indian-origin communities, tracing their roots to indentured labourers, referred to as Girmitiyas. In addition to official meetings, Jaishankar is expected to interact with members of the Indian diaspora and engage with business leaders, reinforcing people-to-people ties alongside economic diplomacy.
India has steadily deepened ties with Caribbean nations through high-level engagements in recent years. For example, in November 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Suriname’s then President Chandrikapersad Santokhi at the India-CARICOM Summit, reviewing cooperation in trade, development and cultural ties.
During Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness’s visit to India in October 2024, a road in New Delhi was named “Jamaica Marg”, symbolising close bilateral relations.
In July 2025, during his visit to Trinidad and Tobago, PM Modi announced the extension of Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) cards up to the sixth generation of the Indian diaspora.
Why is the Caribbean important to India’s global strategy?
The Caribbean holds growing importance in India’s foreign policy as New Delhi expands its footprint in the Global South. With shared historical ties, strategic geographic positioning, and opportunities in trade and development partnerships, the region offers scope for enhanced diplomatic and economic engagement.
Because of such strong, historical connections, Jaishankar’s visit is expected to reinforce political and diplomatic ties, expand economic and development cooperation, strengthen diaspora engagement, and further deepen collaboration on regional and global issues.
“This visit of EAM is envisaged to continue the momentum of India’s political engagements… and boost our longstanding and friendly relations,” the MEA said.
