Vice Admiral Sanjay Vatsayan has been appointed as the next Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Western Naval Command, headquartered in Mumbai. He will succeed Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan, who has been named the next Chief of the Naval Staff following the retirement of Admiral Dinesh Kumar Tripathi on May 31.
Vice Admiral Vatsayan currently serves as the 47th Vice Chief of Naval Staff and will take charge of one of the Indian Navy’s most strategically significant commands.
The Western Naval Command oversees India’s maritime front along the Arabian Sea, guarding vital sea lanes and hosting the Western Fleet, known as the Sword Arm. The fleet is home to both of the Indian Navy’s aircraft carriers, INS Vikrant and INS Vikramaditya.
Career and Naval Experience
An alumnus of the 71st course of the National Defence Academy, Vice Admiral Vatsayan was commissioned into the Indian Navy on January 1, 1988. A specialist in Gunnery and Missile Systems, he brings over three decades of operational, command, and policy experience to his new role.
He was part of the commissioning crew of guided missile destroyer INS Mysore and also served aboard INS Nishank and Coast Guard vessel ICGS Sangram. His command portfolio spans a wide range of warships, from Coast Guard ship C-05 and missile vessels INS Vibhuti and INS Nashak, to missile corvette INS Kuthar and guided missile frigate INS Sahyadri.
In February 2020, he assumed command of the Eastern Fleet, leading key operational deployments and exercises at a period of heightened maritime activity in the wake of the Galwan Valley clash.
At Naval Headquarters, Vice Admiral Vatsayan has held several senior planning and policy appointments, including Director of Naval Plans and Assistant Chief of Naval Staff (Policy and Plans). Before his tenure as Vice Chief of Naval Staff, he served as Deputy Chief of the Integrated Defence Staff, where he focused on operations coordination, force development, tri-service integration, and defence indigenisation policy.
He has also served as Deputy Commandant of the National Defence Academy and as Chief of Staff of the Eastern Naval Command, where he oversaw operational readiness and infrastructure development.
In recognition of his distinguished service, Vice Admiral Vatsayan was conferred the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal in 2021.
