India, on Thursday (May 7, 2026), vehemently rejected all allegations of foreign interference made by the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) in a recent report, calling them “baseless imputations.”
India also urged Canada to take decisive action against Khalistani extremist groups that were operating with impunity on Canadian soil.
At his weekly media briefing, India’s Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said India’s stance on the Khalistani extremist groups operating in Canada remained “clear and consistent.”
Jaiswal, answering reporters’ questions on the CSIS report, stressed that New Delhi doesn’t interfere in the internal affairs of other nations.
“We categorically reject such baseless imputations. India is a democracy that adheres to international norms and respects the sovereignty of other nations. It is not our policy to interfere in the issues of other countries,” Jaiswal said, posting the ball in Canada’s court to contain the Khalistani extremist elements.
The spokesperson said any concerns related to such matters should be addressed through “established mechanisms” rather than through “politicised or public narratives.”
Alluding to the CSIS report, Jaiswal said the Canadian intelligence agency itself acknowledged that certain groups within Canada were using its territory to promote violence against India.
“We have consistently spoken out about concerns regarding the use of Canadian territory as a haven by extremists and separatists,” he said.
“The CSIS assessment acknowledges the presence of supporters of the Khalistan separatist movement in Canada and notes that Canada-based Khalistani extremist groups continue to pose a national security threat not only to India but also to Canada,” he added.
Jaiswal said such groups misused democratic freedoms and institutions to promote extremism and raise funds allegedly linked to violent activities.
“India has repeatedly urged the Canadian authorities to take effective action against anti-India elements operating from its soil. This includes addressing the issue of glorification of violence, threats against diplomats and leaders, vandalism of places of worship, and attempts to promote secessionism through so-called referendums,” he added.
India’s rejection of the CSIS report accusing it of interference within Canada came amidst continuing diplomatic tensions between the two nations on the issue.
The issue was first raised by former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau a few years ago inside parliament and outside, amidst Khalistani separatists’ violent activities against India and Indian diplomatic and religious institutions within Canada.
