Indian Army, IIT-Madras join hands to replace imported weapon components

New Delhi: The Indian Army has signed an MoU (memorandum of understanding) with IIT-Madras to work on critical components used in its weapon systems, as the force looks to reduce its dependency on imported parts for repairs and maintenance. The partnership will focus on finding Indian-made solutions for components that are either difficult to source or are no longer in production.
The Army announced the agreement in a post on X, calling the initiative “Advancing Defence Indigenisation” and linking it to its JAIseVIJAY mission. It said the work with IIT-Madras would help build local capabilities to repair and maintain equipment while cutting dependence on imported spares.
A key focus of the partnership will be components that can become a problem when their original suppliers stop producing them or when replacement parts are no longer easily available. Developing indigenous alternatives could allow the Army to keep such systems in service for longer without having to wait for foreign suppliers.
The agreement also brings the Army’s operational requirements closer to IIT-Madras’ research and engineering capabilities. Instead of relying only on procurement of new equipment, the collaboration is aimed at solving some of the practical problems involved in keeping existing weapon systems functional and available for operations.
The latest agreement follows an expanding partnership between the Army and IIT-Madras in defence research. In August 2025, the defence ministry announced the establishment of Agnishodh, an Indian Army research cell at IIT-Madras, to facilitate joint work on technologies relevant to the armed forces.
The two sides have already worked together on indigenous defence technology, including the development and testing of ramjet-assisted 155mm artillery shells. IIT-Madras said the project, launched with the Army in 2020, underwent trials at the School of Artillery in Deolali and the Pokhran field firing range.
The new MoU takes that cooperation into another area, focusing on the components needed to repair and sustain existing weapon systems. The Army said the partnership would strengthen its “indigenous repair and sustenance capabilities”, while IIT-Madras’ research expertise could help develop alternatives for imported and ageing components, while also backing India’s vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) in defence.
