New Delhi: India and the United States signalled continued momentum in their security partnership on Thursday as the US ambassador to India, Sergio Gor, met the Union home minister, Amit Shah, in New Delhi for talks on counterterrorism, border security and transnational crime. The meeting comes amid growing cooperation between the two countries on security and law-enforcement issues, reflecting a broader effort to strengthen strategic ties beyond trade and defence.

According to Gor, discussions focused on enhancing collaboration against terrorism, tackling narcotics trafficking, securing borders and ensuring greater coordination in bringing criminals to justice.

In a post on X, Gor said, “Had an excellent meeting with honourable home minister Amit Shah we had a fruitful discussion on enhancing collaboration to combat terrorism, shield our people from narcotics and illicit drugs, secure our borders, and jointly bring criminals to justice in both nations.”

The engagement marks one of the ambassador’s first major meetings after returning from the G7 Summit in France, where senior Indian and American leaders held discussions on a range of bilateral and global issues.

Along with details of his meeting with Shah, Gor shared a photograph of the prime minister, Narendra Modi, and the US president, Donald Trump, from the G7 summit in France, saying the visit had yielded positive outcomes for bilateral ties.

As RNA Media reported on Wednesday, Modi and Trump held talks on a range of issues, including trade, regional security and economic cooperation. The discussions also included a review of efforts to conclude an interim bilateral trade agreement, with both sides taking stock of progress made so far.

The Ministry of External Affairs said the engagement on trade issues will continue, with the US trade representative, Jamieson Greer, expected to travel to India for further negotiations.

Beyond trade, the two leaders examined developments under the India-US COMPACT framework, which aims to deepen collaboration in key sectors. Progress in defence, strategic technologies, energy and commercial partnerships was among the areas reviewed during the meeting.

The leaders also reiterated their resolve to further strengthen the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership and deepen cooperation across multiple areas of mutual interest.
