New Delhi: The United States president, Donald Trump, has indicated that Washington could launch fresh strikes against Iran as soon as Sunday, while leaving open the possibility of a negotiated agreement to end the conflict. Asked by a reporter on Saturday whether the US would carry out another attack on Iran, Trump replied, “Do you really think I’d tell you that?”
When the reporter responded, “We got to ask,” Trump called the question “stupid” but acknowledged that Washington was considering military action. “Maybe tomorrow… There’s a possibility I will. There’s also a possibility we’ll have a nice, big, beautiful agreement,” he said after casting his ballot in Florida.
Trump added that Iran wanted to make a deal but questioned whether Tehran would honour its commitments. His remarks came a day after he threatened another round of military action, saying Washington could launch “another little Epic Fury” unless Iran agreed to negotiate at a rally in Fort Myers, Florida, as RNA Media reported earlier.
Trump said the US had acted to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons and praised the American military’s performance. He claimed that US forces had destroyed Iran’s fighter jets and sunk 259 Iranian ships, adding that the country was grappling with record inflation.
The latest warning comes amid reports that Washington and Israel are examining options for renewed strikes against Iran after election in both countries. Pickaxe Mountain, where nuclear-related facilities are believed to be buried deep underground, has been mentioned in reports about potential targets, although no publicly confirmed decision to launch another attack has emerged.
US intelligence has also raised concerns about threats to American personnel. In a memo released on Friday, director of national intelligence, Jay Clayton, warned the United States secretary of state, Marco Rubio, that Iran had substantially increased efforts to target US personnel, with lethal plots against American citizens reaching advanced stages in the Middle East and certain other countries.
Clayton offered to downgrade sensitive intelligence so Rubio could share the information more widely with state department staff. The warning adds to concerns in Washington about the potential risks to American personnel if hostilities resume.
Tehran, meanwhile, has warned that further US military action could prompt retaliation against American-linked artificial intelligence facilities, data centres and undersea communication cables across the Persian Gulf. Iranian officials have described the infrastructure as part of America’s economic and military presence in West Asia, RNA Media earlier reported.
US technology companies, including Amazon, Microsoft, Google and Oracle, operate digital infrastructure across the Gulf, raising concerns about potential disruption to regional connectivity and digital services. With military threats continuing alongside diplomatic signals, Trump’s latest remarks leave open the possibility of another round of US strikes or a negotiated settlement, without indicating which course Washington will ultimately pursue.
