The Indian Army will soon get ground-based mobile electronic systems from a state-run company to boost its warfare capabilities and to meet emerging security threats from China and Pakistan.

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) announced that it signed a Rs 1,476-crore contract with Bharat Electronics Limited’s Hyderabad-based unit to procure five ground-based mobile electronic systems for the army.

“The contract, under the Buy (Indian-Indigenously Designed, Developed, and Manufactured) category, was inked in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh,” the ministry said in a statement on Tuesday (May 5, 2026).

The ground-based mobile electronic systems were expected to enhance the Indian Army’s surveillance and networking infrastructure, apart from improving communications.

The systems would come with a minimum of 72% indigenous content, thereby boosting self-reliance in the defence manufacturing sector.

“The system will modernise the Indian Army units and strengthen the indigenous defence manufacturing ecosystem of the country,” the ministry said.

The defence ministry said the contract reinforced Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government’s commitment to ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ (Self-Reliant India) and Make-in-India in the defence sector.
