Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, Chief of Naval Staff, embarked on the Myanmar Navy frigate UMS Kyan Sit Thar (F12) on Saturday (May 3) as part of a three-day visit to the country, engaging directly with naval commanders to strengthen bilateral maritime ties in the Indian Ocean Region.

Received aboard the frigate by Captain Kyaw Thet Naing, No. 1 Fleet Commander, with a ceremonial Guard of Honour, Admiral Tripathi was briefed on Myanmar’s indigenous shipbuilding capabilities and given an overview of the Fleet’s operational readiness, the Indian Navy said in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

“The CNS was briefed on the indigenous shipbuilding capabilities of the Myanmar Navy and provided an overview of the No.1 Fleet’s capabilities,” the Indian Navy added.

Discussions during the engagement covered growing bilateral and multilateral cooperation between the two navies and measures to enhance interoperability for maritime security in the Indian Ocean Region.

The Admiral is also scheduled to hold high-level talks with Myanmar’s top military leadership—Commander-in-Chief General Ye Win Oo, Defence Minister General U Htun Aung, and Myanmar Navy Chief Admiral Htein Win—with maritime security, capacity building, training, and capability enhancement on the agenda.

His engagements extend to key naval establishments, including the Central Naval Command and the Naval Training Command. He will also lay a wreath at the Armed Forces Fallen Heroes’ War Memorial.

The visit builds on an established framework of bilateral engagement that includes Defence Cooperation Meetings, Staff Talks, training exchanges, the India-Myanmar Naval Exercise (IMNEX), and the Indo-Myanmar Coordinated Patrol (IMCOR).

The Ministry of Defence said the engagements reaffirm the longstanding India-Myanmar partnership, anchored in mutual trust and a shared commitment to maritime security in the Indian Ocean Region.
