New Delhi: The chief of the air staff, Air Chief Marshal Amar Preet Singh, has called for a phased approach to military theaterization. He said India must build a command structure based on its security needs. He cautioned against permanently dividing fighter aircraft across geographical regions or copying foreign models.

In an interview with PTI on Sunday, ACM Singh said theaterization should follow “centralized control” where needed and “decentralized execution” where appropriate. He stressed that the transition must not affect the armed forces’ operational readiness.

India is working to integrate the Army, Navy and Air Force under joint theatre commands. The plan aims to improve coordination between the three services. Under this system, unified commanders would oversee military operations in specific regions or areas.

The Air Force has stressed the need to retain flexibility in deploying fighter aircraft. Air power often needs to move quickly between different areas, depending on the threat. ACM Singh said India must develop a structure that meets its own operational requirements.

The Air chief also referred to ongoing conflicts around the world to highlight the importance of air power. He warned against predicting future battlefields with “excessive certainty”. He said India must remain prepared for changing forms of warfare.

IAF monitoring Indo-Pacific security

ACM Singh said the Air Force was closely monitoring developments across the Indo-Pacific. He added that the force was focusing on capabilities that would allow it to operate over long distances and protect India’s national interests.

His remarks come amid concerns over China’s growing military presence in the region. India, the United States and other major powers have called for a free, open and peaceful Indo-Pacific.

ACM Singh said India’s priorities remained the protection of its national interests, sovereignty and strategic autonomy. He also stressed the importance of a rules-based regional order.

Theaterization must protect operational readiness

Theaterization aims to bring the Army, Navy and Air Force closer together during planning and military operations. The proposed system is expected to improve coordination and the use of military resources.

However, questions remain over command arrangements and how assets will be allocated among the services. The Air Force has emphasized the need to preserve the flexibility required for air operations.

ACM Singh said the transformation must take place in phases. He stressed that operational readiness should never be compromised during the process.

ACM Singh took charge as the air chief on September 30, 2024, and is approaching the end of his tenure. The comments point to the need for balancing joint military operations with the operational needs of the Air Force as India forges ahead with theaterization.
