New Delhi: The US president, Donald Trump, sparked a diplomatic row, publicly putting up the Kurdish forces in West Asia for intercepting and hoarding weapons that Washington had shipped to Iran’s opposition to mount a civil war against the Islamic rule of the supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei. Trump told the American channel, Fox News, that he was “very disappointed with the Kurds” and accused them of stockpiling the advanced weaponry sent to the Iranian opposition groups.

The weapons were part of a covert operation the US administration was carrying out inside Iran to mount an armed overthrow of the Khamenei regime in Tehran. The public reprimand of the Kurds on a television show immediately stirred up a diplomatic storm, as regional friction in West Asia heightened, with the American allies voicing concern.

The White House maintained that the Kurdish faction failed to uphold its commitment to transfer the weapon systems to the Iranian opposition, despite the group denying and rejecting the US allegations.

The highly sensitive, secret weapons transfer controversy came about due to American intelligence failure and logistics mismanagement along the volatile Iran-Iraq border. The Trump administration asserted that specific arms shipments of a tactical nature were intended to strengthen internal unrest within Iran. Instead, the Iraq-based Kurdish factions retained the consignment for their own use within the areas controlled by them.

This unauthorized retention of arms supplies by the Kurdish elements was viewed by the US as a significant breach of trust, effectively stalling a broader global campaign to pressure the Iranian government to agree to peace in West Asia. However, both the Kurdish group and the Iranian opposition political leadership have rejected the Trump claims as entirely baseless, maintaining that they had maintained a transparent relationship with the American intelligence agencies.

It has been assessed that the controversy stemmed from a fundamental misalignment of the American strategic objectives in West Asia with the local insurgent groups, both in Iran and Iraq. While Kurdish forces were primarily focused on defending the territory controlled by them in the region, they were not a willing participant in actively mobilising an armed overthrow of the Iranian regime.

The open controversy over Trump’s remarks on covert operations risks the American counterterror operations in West Asia. Kurds have always aligned with the American interests in the region, benefiting from the support for their regional independence movements from the US intelligence agencies. However, the present row threatens to unravel the assets that the US agencies built among the subaltern groups in the region.

It has also invited severe condemnation from Iranian leadership, which has long accused the US of working to destabilize their nation by orchestrating civil unrest.
