Two Assam cops shot dead by colleague in fratricidal firing

New Delhi: Two Assam Police personnel were shot dead at a police outpost in Kamrup district early Thursday in a suspected incident of fratricidal firing, with a fellow policeman accused of opening fire on them. The shooting took place at the Gamerimura Police Outpost near the Assam-Meghalaya border.
According to media reports, the firing occurred between 4am and 5am at the outpost, which falls under Boko Police Station. After the incident, senior police officials arrived at the spot and started investigating the circumstances in which the shooting occurred.
The accused has been identified as Chiranjib Choudhury, a constable attached to the 29th Assam Police Battalion. He allegedly used an AK-47 service rifle to open fire at the outpost, the Sentinel Assam reported.
The two personnel killed in the firing have been identified as Indrajit Bora and Fazrul Ali. Bora was the officer in charge of the Gamerimura Police Outpost and Ali was a Havildar.
Both personnel sustained gunshot injuries in the firing and died in the incident.
Bora was a resident of Changshari in Kamrup district, while Ali hailed from Sarboga. Choudhury is a resident of Dhubri district.
The circumstances leading to the shooting and the motive behind it have not yet been cleared. Police are investigating the incident and are expected to establish the sequence of events that led to the firing.
