Kargil war Air Force veteran allegedly attacked with iron rod in Gurugram parking row

New Delhi: Group Captain Amit Kumar Gupta (retired), a Kargil war veteran, was allegedly assaulted with an iron rod following a parking dispute at M3M Magnum Business Park in Gurugram’s Sector 58, on Thrusday. Gupta suffered a head injury and a fracture to his left arm, while police have arrested a 24-year-old parking attendant in connection with the incident.
Gupta had gone to Gonzo restaurant at the commercial complex with his family for dinner around 8pm. According to his complaint, he dropped his family near the entrance and went to park the car but was directed between different parking areas before staff allegedly refused to let him park.
The retired officer alleged that while he was reversing his vehicle, a parking attendant began punching and hitting the car’s window. When Gupta stepped out to object, the attendant allegedly returned with an iron rod and struck him on the left arm and head, leaving him bleeding. He was subsequently taken to Medanta Hospital, where he underwent treatment, including surgery for the arm injury.
Gupta also alleged that security personnel at the complex did not intervene after the assault and that he remained at the spot for around 30 minutes before his family took him to hospital. He said he made repeated calls for police assistance, while Gurugram Police said they received information about the assault that night and a team was sent to the spot.
Police said CCTV footage helped establish the sequence of events and identify the suspect as Deepak Mavi, 24, a resident of Kot village in Faridabad district. The assistant commissioner of police, Abhilaksh Joshi, said prima facie the footage showed Gupta being beaten with an iron rod and confirmed that a fracture had been noted on his arm.
Gupta submitted a detailed written complaint on Sunday, after which an FIR was registered at Sector 65 police station. PTI reported that the case was registered under Sections 115(2), 126(2) and 351(3) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, covering voluntarily causing hurt, wrongful restraint and criminal intimidation. Police said additional provisions could be considered on the basis of medical findings.
Mavi was arrested on Monday within about seven hours of the FIR being registered. Police said that during questioning he stated that an argument had broken out over parking and that, in a fit of anger, he picked up an iron pipe lying nearby and struck Gupta on the arm. Investigators are continuing to examine CCTV footage and question the accused about the sequence of events.
Gupta was part of the Indian Air Force’s Operation Safed Sagar during the 1999 Kargil War, police said. Operation Safed Sagar was the IAF’s air campaign in support of the Indian Army’s Operation Vijay, with combat aircraft and helicopters deployed to support operations to recapture Indian positions during the conflict.
Gupta remains under treatment for his injuries. Police said the investigation is continuing, with medical records, CCTV footage and other evidence being examined before further legal action is taken.
