New Delhi: The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on Friday appointed 1994-batch AGMUT cadre Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Anurag Kumar as the New Delhi police commissioner, placing an experienced intelligence officer at the helm of one of the country’s most strategically significant police forces. An official order said the appointment will take effect from the date he assumes charge and will remain in force until further orders.

Kumar succeeds Satish Golcha, a 1992-batch AGMUT cadre IPS officer, who has been directed to report to the lieutenant governor of Delhi for further posting. Kumar’s appointment comes a day after the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet approved his repatriation from the Intelligence Bureau (IB) to his parent AGMUT cadre, paving the way for his elevation to the top policing post in the national capital.

The appointment brings an officer with extensive intelligence experience to the top post in the Delhi Police. Before this appointment, Kumar served as special director in the IB, where he worked on assignments related to national security, intelligence gathering, counter-terrorism and internal security.

As commissioner, Kumar will be in charge of policing the national capital, where the force deals with everything from day-to-day law enforcement to the security of constitutional institutions, diplomatic missions and high-profile events. The job also entails close coordination with multiple central security and intelligence agencies.

Career and service record

Anurag Kumar’s career spans over three decades, with a major part of it in the IB. His work has largely focused on intelligence, internal security and counter-terrorism. During his service, he received the Police Medal for Meritorious Service in 2010 and the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service in 2016.

His immediate priorities are expected to include strengthening intelligence-based policing, enhancing counter-terrorism preparedness, tackling organized crime and cybercrime, improving women’s safety and protecting critical infrastructure. Kumar’s appointment marks a leadership change for the force as it addresses evolving security and law enforcement challenges in the capital. Coordination among the multiple security agencies operating in Delhi is also likely to be a key focus under his leadership.

The Delhi Police acknowledged Kumar’s appointment via a post on X after the home ministry issued the appointment order.
