New Delhi: External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar on Monday held extensive talks with Mongolian foreign minister Battsetseg Batmunkh, reviewing key bilateral projects and exploring new avenues of cooperation as the two countries seek to strengthen their Strategic Partnership.

Addressing the media after the meeting, Jaishankar described the discussions as “warm, productive and open,” and thanked the Mongolian government for their hospitality.

The centrepiece of India’s engagement remains the Mongolia oil refinery project, one of New Delhi’s largest development partnership ventures abroad. During talks with Mongolian Foreign Minister, Jaishankar reviewed the status of the refinery and other India-backed projects while exploring new areas of collaboration in trade, technology, supply chains, defence and energy.

The discussions come as both countries seek to translate political goodwill into economic and strategic outcomes. Traditionally, both countries have emphasised their cultural and civilisational links, but more emphasis has been on development cooperation and connectivity in recent engagements.

Jaishankar’s visit also follows Mongolian President Khurelsukh Ukhnaa’s state visit to India in October 2025, which produced a roadmap for expanding cooperation across multiple sectors. Officials from both sides are now working to implement commitments made during that visit and identify new projects under the strategic partnership framework.

Beyond diplomatic talks, Jaishankar held meetings with several senior Mongolian leaders, including Speaker of the State Great Khural Sandag Byambatsogt, Education Minister L Enkh-Amgalan and former President N Enkhbayar.

In a post on X, the minister said he welcomed support for stronger parliamentary exchanges and discussed ways to deepen “people-centric development partnership.” He also underscored the importance of education and institutional partnerships in broadening bilateral ties.

Reiterating India’s commitment to deeper engagement with Mongolia, Jaishankar expressed confidence that bilateral ties would continue to grow and reach “even greater heights” in the coming years.
