New Delhi: Andhra Pradesh has recorded a dozen Covid-19 infections and four related deaths in a little under a month, according to the state government. This marks a modest but notable uptick after a period of relative quiet on the pandemic front.

On Thursday, the state commissioner of health and family welfare, G Veerapandian, said in a statement issued in Vijayawada that the state’s first case of this cluster surfaced on June 26 in Kadapa district. Between July 1 and Thursday, 11 further cases were confirmed, taking the running total to 12.

Kadapa district has borne the brunt of the cluster, accounting for eight of the 12 cases. Guntur followed with two, while Visakhapatnam and Kakinada districts recorded one case apiece. Health authorities said 67 suspected cases were put through Covid-19 testing during the period under review, of which 11 returned positive results between June 26 and July 15. Four patients did not survive.

The statement did not specify the age profile of the deceased, their underlying health conditions, or which variant of the virus – if identified – was responsible for the cluster. Andhra Pradesh’s health department has, in previous waves, attributed similar small clusters to seasonal upticks in respiratory illness during the monsoon months, when testing for influenza-like symptoms typically increases.

Pattern seen elsewhere

Andhra Pradesh’s experience mirrors a broader, low-level pattern observed across several Indian states in recent months, where isolated clusters of Covid-19 have periodically resurfaced without triggering the scale of infection or mortality seen during the pandemic’s earlier waves. Public health officials nationally have generally characterized such clusters as manageable, with the overwhelming majority of patients recovering under home isolation rather than requiring hospitalization.

Andhra Pradesh was among the states hit hardest during the pandemic’s peak years, recording well over a lakh cumulative deaths and adjacent statistics and case numbers running into the millions between 2020 and 2022. The state has since built out substantial testing and surveillance infrastructure, which health officials say allows for faster identification of small clusters such as the one reported this week.

The health department has not announced any new restrictions or advisories in response to the latest figures. Residents in the affected districts, particularly Kadapa, are likely to be encouraged to maintain basic precautions, including mask-wearing in crowded indoor settings and prompt testing for flu-like symptoms, though no formal directive had been issued at the time of publication.
