New Delhi: The US president, Donald Trump, unveiled a Boeing 747-8 gifted by Qatar, which was being prepared to serve as a presidential transport aircraft. Trump described it as a “flying White House” and one of the “most luxurious aircraft ever built”.
The aircraft was showcased at Joint Base Andrews near Washington after undergoing modifications required for government service. Trump said the jet would soon begin commissioning flights before entering operational use. The aircraft is expected to serve as a bridge platform until the delayed next-generation VC-25B presidential aircraft are delivered by Boeing.
How much is Trump’s new Air Force One worth?
The Boeing 747-8 is estimated to be worth around $400 million. However, the overall cost of bringing the aircraft into presidential service extends well beyond its purchase value.
The US Air Force has spent months integrating secure communications systems, defensive equipment and other mission-specific modifications required for presidential transport. US officials have previously told lawmakers that the retrofit programme is expected to cost hundreds of millions of dollars, although less than $400 million.
Security and ethics questions
The acceptance of a foreign-donated aircraft for presidential use has sparked significant debate in Washington.
As RNA Media had reported earlier, security experts and lawmakers have questioned whether an aircraft originally owned by a foreign government can be fully cleared for use as a presidential transport platform. Concerns have focused on the extensive inspections and modifications required to ensure the aircraft meets strict US security standards.
The gift has also raised legal and constitutional questions. Critics argue that US rules place strict limits on gifts from foreign governments to federal officeholders, while the Trump administration has maintained that the aircraft was accepted on behalf of the US government and the department of defence rather than as a personal gift to the president.
Can US presidents accept gifts from foreign governments?
Foreign leaders can give gifts to US presidents, as a matter of diplomatic protocol. However, gifts are usually considered the property of the US government, not the individual president.
Under federal ethics rules, personal acceptance of expensive gifts from foreign governments is heavily restricted. High-value items are typically transferred to the US National Archives, government agencies, presidential libraries or official collections rather than remaining personal property.
The scale of the Qatari aircraft gift has made it one of the most closely scrutinized foreign gifts ever accepted by the United States government.
Trump has repeatedly dismissed criticism surrounding the aircraft.
In a Truth Social post, he argued that accepting the aircraft would save taxpayer money and defended the decision by writing, “Only a FOOL would not accept this gift on behalf of our Country.”
