New Delhi: A combat canine has taken to the skies with the Indian Army in a rare airborne exercise, as a paratrooper of the Surya Warriors carried out a tandem parachute jump over Behat Drop Zone (DZ) alongside a dog handler and his combat canine. The team made the descent while carrying a full combat load, showcasing the level of training and coordination required to deploy military working dogs alongside airborne troops.
The Surya Warriors, in a post on X said the jump was a remarkable display of “courage, precision and combat readiness”. The formation said the jump is believed to be among the first instances of a tandem descent involving a dog handler and his canine, building upon earlier free-fall jumps undertaken with the dog.
The exercise highlighted the trust and teamwork between the soldier and his canine partner, while demonstrating the ability of specialized military teams to operate in challenging airborne environments. The successful descent also reflects efforts to make combat canines capable of supporting troops in increasingly demanding operational scenarios.
Military dogs carry out various functions such as locating explosives and weapons as well as tracking individuals among other duties. They are able to work in tandem with the soldiers in various environments making them significant in specialized military units.
What is a tandem parachute jump?
Tandem parachute jumping is a process in which two people will descend by using the same parachute, where one will be behind the other one. In most cases, the person who has been doing this for a long time usually operates the parachute while the other person holds on.
In military exercises, tandem jumps help achieve deployment of people with certain roles or carrying special equipment together without compromising stability while falling from the sky. It is a process which involves training to enable stability in exiting from the aircraft, opening up the parachute, descent, and landing.
A jump that involves a combat canine creates an extra level of challenge, since not only does he have to be harnessed safely but has to be kept safe during the whole process of jumping. The soldier and parachutist need to work in coordination, and thus the whole exercise becomes an example of preparation and teamwork.
