New Delhi: Employees in selected Microsoft teams in India will have the option to leave the company under a new voluntary exit scheme that offers financial support and career-planning resources. The programme applies to staff at internal job level 70 and below, although eligibility depends on whether their organization is participating.

Microsoft has a workforce of around 23,000 in India, PTI reported, although the company has not specified how many Indian employees are covered by the voluntary exit offer. The programme is open to eligible staff across four countries, with about 60,000 employees worldwide qualifying for it.

Who is eligible and how can employees apply?

The voluntary exit offer (VEO) covers eligible employees in participating organizations in India, Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States. Microsoft said participation would depend on business priorities, customer commitments and workforce requirements, meaning the scheme will not be available across every team.

Eligible employees will receive an email containing a link to their individual offer details. They can review the terms and follow the instructions provided to decide whether to participate.

PTI reported that eligible employees in India have until December 1 to make their decision. Microsoft has described the scheme as time-limited but has not disclosed the financial terms of individual offers in its announcement.

Why is Microsoft VEO?

Amy Coleman, Microsoft’s executive vice-president and chief people officer, outlined the programme in an internal communication on Monday. She said the initiative builds on lessons from the company’s voluntary retirement programme earlier this year and gives employees another option for planning their next career move.

The company said it would continue helping employees develop new skills and explore internal opportunities where appropriate. Coleman also stressed that there would be no single approach for every team, as participating organizations have different workforce requirements.

According to report, Microsoft spokesperson said the company remained committed to expanding its presence in India, with $20.5 billion committed between 2025 and 2029 towards cloud and AI infrastructure, skilling and operations.

“We are also on track to fulfil our commitment of equipping 20 million people across India with AI skills by 2030,” the spokesperson said.

Microsoft has not disclosed how many Indian employees are eligible for the exit scheme or how many are expected to accept the offer.
