History was created on the track in Ranchi as Petty Officer Gurindervir Singh became the first Indian sprinter to breach the 10.10-second barrier in the men’s 100m race, clocking a stunning 10.09 seconds at the National Federation Senior Athletics Competition.
The Indian Navy, in a tweet shared on Saturday, congratulated Petty Officer Gurindervir Singh, saying “THE FASTEST MAN IN INDIA WEARS WHITES.” The post highlighted his historic achievement, where he set a new national record in the 100m sprint with a timing of 10.09 seconds at the 29th National Federation Cup Athletics Championships in Ranchi.
The Navy further noted that with the remarkable performance, Gurindervir had also qualified for the Asian Games and Commonwealth Games 2026, while saluting the “spirit, speed and dedication” of its champion sprinter.
The 25-year-old shattered the previous national record of 10.15 seconds and further strengthened India’s growing presence in sprint athletics.
Gurindervir set a new national record by 0.06 seconds. The earlier mark of 10.15 seconds had been set just a day earlier by Animesh Kijur.
Interestingly, Gurindervir had first broken the record himself in the semifinals with a timing of 10.17 seconds before Animesh went faster later in the day.
In the final on Saturday (May 24), however, Gurindervir reclaimed the national record with his stunning 10.09-second sprint. Both he and Animesh have now qualified for the Glasgow Commonwealth Games in the men’s 100m event.
The Federation Cup also saw another big achievement as Vishal Thennarasu Kayalvizhi became the first Indian man to run the 400m in under 45 seconds, winning the race with a national record time of 44.98 seconds, ANI reported.
Vishal’s record came shortly after Gurindervir’s historic sprint, making it a memorable day for Indian athletics in Ranchi.
