US envoy Sergio Gor meets NSA Ajit Doval, calls India partnership vital to global security

New Delhi: The US ambassador to India, Sergio Gor, met the national security advisor, Ajit Doval, in New Delhi on Tuesday, with the two sides discussing ways to deepen strategic cooperation as India and the United States seek to inject fresh momentum into their relationship. Following the meeting, Gor said the partnership was important for addressing global security challenges and pointed to an expanding convergence of interests between the two countries.
Gor described his talks with Doval as “fruitful” and said India and the United States shared many of the same goals, adding that bilateral engagement continued to grow. The Indian side did not immediately issue a detailed readout of the meeting, leaving the specific regional and security issues discussed undisclosed.
The meeting came a day after Gor held talks with the foreign secretary, Vikram Misri, as Washington and New Delhi maintain a steady tempo of high-level diplomatic contacts. Although neither side released substantive details of the Gor-Misri discussions, the sequence indicates an effort to sustain political and strategic coordination across a range of bilateral and international issues.
The exchanges also followed the August 8 telephone conversation between the prime minister, Narendra Modi, and the US vice-president, JD Vance, during which the two reviewed the India-US comprehensive global strategic partnership. According to the Indian readout cited in reports, the two sides reaffirmed their intention to strengthen cooperation in trade, defence, critical and emerging technologies, energy security and critical minerals, while also exchanging views on regional and global developments.
Defence, trade and access to critical minerals have increasingly emerged as important strands of the renewed engagement. The two countries are simultaneously seeking to advance strategic and technological cooperation and resolve commercial differences that had placed considerable strain on the relationship during the previous year.
Trade negotiations have remained an important part of that effort. The office of the US trade representative said in June that its chief, Jamieson Greer, was travelling to New Delhi for discussions with the commerce and industry minister, Piyush Goyal, and other senior officials on an interim agreement forming part of broader negotiations for a bilateral trade agreement.
The negotiations trace their current framework to the February 13, 2025 meeting between Modi and the US president, Donald Trump, when the two leaders agreed to launch talks for a bilateral trade agreement. The two governments subsequently established terms of reference for the negotiations, covering market access, tariffs, non-tariff barriers and other commercial issues.
Relations had suffered a significant setback after Washington imposed steep tariffs on Indian goods and Trump repeatedly claimed credit for ending the India-Pakistan military confrontation in May 2025 – an assertion New Delhi rejected. India has consistently maintained that the cessation of hostilities resulted from direct communication between the Indian and Pakistani sides rather than US mediation.
The latest diplomatic activity suggests both governments are now trying to move beyond those strains without allowing disagreements to overwhelm a partnership that spans defence, technology, energy and strategic cooperation. Gor’s public emphasis on India’s role in tackling global security challenges also comes at a time when instability in West Asia, maritime security concerns and wider geopolitical competition are placing greater weight on coordination between major Indo-Pacific partners.
For New Delhi and Washington, the immediate test will be whether the renewed political engagement can produce tangible progress in trade while preserving the substantial strategic convergence built over the past two decades. The continuing discussions between Gor and senior Indian officials indicate that both sides remain invested in preventing recent differences from derailing the broader India-US relationship.
