US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is all set to visit India on May 23, 2026, to attend the Quad foreign ministers meet in New Delhi, when he will meet with Indian External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar for bilateral talks on the entire gamut of bilateral relationship.

US Embassy in India announced that India would host the Quad meeting, which would also be attended by Australian and Japanese Foreign Minister, apart from Rubio. The embassy said it looked forward to welcoming the US Secretary of State “for his first visit to India, ministerial Quad meetings, high-level engagements, and celebrating 250 years of America.”

When in India, Rubio and Jaishankar are expected to further the bilateral cooperation in the fields of trade, defence, and energy. Rubio would also visit Kolkata, where the US had a major presence in the form of a consulate. He would also be in Agra and Jaipur, apart from being in New Delhi for the Quad and bilateral meetings.

“Secretary Rubio will travel to India from May 23-26, where he will visit Kolkata, Agra, Jaipur, and New Delhi,” State Department spokesman Tommy Pigott said. The Secretary will discuss energy, security, trade, and defence cooperation during meetings with senior Indian officials, Pigott said.

Rubio will travel to India from Sweden, where he will attend the NATO Foreign Ministers meeting on May 22. The Quad meeting in India comes after much delay, as India was to host the Quad summit in 2025, but did not. Though scheduling trouble was then cited as a reason for the Quad Summit not being hosted, the bilateral troubles over US President Donald Trump’s tariff war with India was also seen as cause for the frosty Quad ties then.

India, however, has clarified on several occasions that Quad, as a multilateral forum, was important for its Indo-Pacific strategy. India will be hosting the Quad foreign ministers meet when the grouping is expected to deliberate on pressing global challenges, including the fallout of the Iran war.

Jaishankar would preside over the Quad foreign ministers meeting with Rubio, Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong and Japanese Foreign Minister Motegi Toshimitsu participating.
