New Delhi: A man accused of killing his Indian-origin partner in Toronto has been arrested nearly eight months after the 30-year-old woman was found dead inside a residence, the Toronto Police Service said. Abdul Ghafoori, 32, was taken into custody at a Toronto airport on Friday after investigators worked with national and international policing partners to facilitate his return to Canada.
Ghafoori has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the death of Himanshi Khurana, who was identified by police as a Toronto resident. The accused and Khurana were known to each other and were in an intimate partner relationship, according to investigators.
The Toronto Police Service said officers from its fugitive squad and homicide and missing persons unit coordinated with policing agencies in Canada and abroad before Ghafoori was located and arrested on Friday. Police did not disclose the country where he had been staying before his return to Canada.
Ghafoori was scheduled to appear at the Toronto Regional Bail Centre on Saturday, to face the murder charge.
What happened to Himanshi Khurana
The case dates back to December 20, 2025, when Toronto police began investigating reports of a missing woman in the Strachan Avenue and Wellington Street West area.
Toronto police say officers discovered the woman dead inside a home around 6.30am. Her death was subsequently classified as a homicide, making it Toronto’s 40th homicide case of 2025.
Police later identified the victim as Himanshi Khurana, 30. As investigators examined her death, they confirmed that she and Ghafoori were in an relationship.
Ghafoori was subsequently wanted on a first-degree murder charge, with police issuing a warrant and releasing information seeking assistance in locating him.
India reacts to killing
The consulate general of India in Toronto had earlier expressed shock over Khurana’s death and said it was coordinating with Canadian authorities to assist her family.
In a post shared on X, the consulate said it was “deeply saddened and shocked” by the murder of Khurana, describing her as a young Indian national. It also extended condolences to her family and said all possible assistance was being provided in coordination with local authorities.
