New Delhi: Saudi Arabia’s military coalition said on Tuesday that it had intercepted and destroyed three drones north of Riyadh, as the kingdom faces repeated attacks attributed to Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi rebels. The latest interception comes amid a week of deadly strikes on Saudi airports and growing concerns over flight disruptions in the region.
The development comes as tensions rise between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis, with attacks raising concerns over civilian safety and regional security.
According to media reports, at least 20 people were killed in attacks on Saudi airports over the past week. A missile strike on Saturday reportedly killed 13 people at King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh.
Amid growing tensions, the Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, has reportedly sought Saudi Arabia’s approval for Israel to join the military campaign against Yemen’s Houthis, while the United States president, Donald Trump, has also expressed interest in American military involvement. RNA Media had earlier reported on the proposals by both leaders. Houthi official Mohammed Al Bukhaiti has warned that any US intervention would prompt a response targeting American interests in the region.
The continuing attacks have raised concerns about the security of airports and other critical infrastructure across Saudi Arabia, while disruptions to flight operations have affected passengers travelling between India and the kingdom.
