New Delhi: Four Pakistani fishermen were detained by the Border Security Force in Gujarat’s Kutch district on Sunday after entering Indian waters to catch crabs. A fishing boat was also seized during the operation near the India-Pakistan border.

The incident took place in the Sir Creek area, a sensitive coastal region where tidal channels and marshland complicate navigation and border surveillance. Fishing activity in these waters requires monitoring to identify crossings into neighbouring territory.

BSF personnel acted on specific intelligence inputs before detaining the four fishermen on Sunday, PTI reported. The fishermen had entered Indian waters for crab-catching activities, and their boat was seized.

Sir Creek is a narrow, marshy tidal channel in the Rann of Kutch, along the coast between Gujarat and Pakistan’s Sindh province. Its geographical features and tidal conditions make the area difficult to monitor.

Another reason why the creek is very important is that there is a long-running disagreement between India and Pakistan about the delineation of their boundary along the creek. The disagreement revolves around the demarcation of the maritime boundary between the two nations as well as the waters adjacent to the boundary.

Since fishing vessels may enter neighbouring waters near the border, it is essential that the authorities ascertain their position and clarify the details surrounding such cases. The arrest of the fishermen does not mean that they did so intentionally.

BSF secures India’s frontiers along Pakistan and Bangladesh, including areas which are difficult to observe due to difficult geography and bodies of water. The recent event highlights the need for surveillance in Sir Creek, an area where fishing takes place amidst dispute over boundaries.
