New Delhi: A Central Industrial Security Force head constable died after his service rifle reportedly discharged while he was cleaning the weapon inside a CISF camp at Bacheli in Chhattisgarh’s Dantewada district. Police said the incident occurred on Wednesday, and an investigation has been initiated to establish how the firing took place.
The deceased was identified as head constable Dattatraya, a resident of Ahilyanagar in Maharashtra and son of Shivaji B Wangne. According to police officials he was cleaning an AK-47 rifle inside his porta cabin at Bacheli CISF camp when two rounds were suddenly discharged, leaving him seriously injured.
He was taken to NMDC Apollo hospital in Bacheli, where doctors examined him and declared him dead. His body was subsequently sent to the district hospital in Dantewada for postmortem examination and other legal formalities.
Bacheli Police have taken cognizance of the incident and begun an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the discharge. No finding of negligence or any deliberate act has been announced.
Police officials quoted by media said the investigation would include forensic examination of the weapon and the scene, along with the findings of the post-mortem examination. Authorities have not publicly disclosed further details of how the rifle came to discharge while it was being cleaned.
The available police account describes the incident as an accidental firing. Investigators are expected to examine the weapon, surrounding circumstances and medical findings before reaching a final conclusion.
The CISF has a longstanding deployment at the Bailadila Iron Ore Mine complex in Bacheli, where it provides security to installations linked to the state-owned National Mineral Development Corporation. Official records show that a CISF unit is deployed at the Bacheli complex as part of the force’s security responsibilities in the area.
The force is responsible for protecting critical infrastructure and industrial establishments across the country, including mining and public sector installations.
