The latest meetings involving Japan’s Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) leadership and senior Indian officials point to a growing consensus to expand cooperation.
Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri on Monday (May 4, 2026) met with Takayuki Kobayashi, Chairperson of the Policy Research Council of Japan’s ruling LDP. Both sides emphasised the strength of the India-Japan relationship and reiterated their intent to deepen collaboration in areas of mutual interest.
The timing of these interactions is crucial, as these engagements come at a time when global supply chains are shifting and geopolitical tensions reshaping economic priorities. During such times, both India and Japan are seeking reliable partners in the Indo-Pacific region.

The discussions between Misri and Kobayashi reflected a shared understanding that closer ties are not just beneficial, but necessary. With Japan looking to diversify its economic partnerships and India positioning itself as a manufacturing and investment hub, the convergence of interests has created fresh momentum.
“Both sides reaffirmed the strategic importance of India-Japan relations and agreed to advance bilateral ties in domains of shared interest,” the Ministry of External Affairs posted on X.
Their deliberations also focused on enhancing defence cooperation, strengthening maritime security collaboration, expanding defence industrial ties, and advancing shared commitment to peace & stability in the Indo-Pacific region, the Ministry of Defence shared on social media.
What role does economic cooperation play in this partnership?
Economic collaboration remains at the heart of India-Japan relations, and recent discussions have reinforced this focus. Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal’s meeting with the Japanese delegation highlighted a wide spectrum of opportunities, from MSME partnerships to advanced manufacturing.
Key sectors such as automobiles, infrastructure, pharmaceuticals, and high-tech industries are being prioritised, reflecting a shift towards deeper industrial integration. Goyal also stressed the need to boost Indian exports and improve market access, signalling New Delhi’s intent to make bilateral trade more balanced and dynamic.
The Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) continues to serve as a foundational framework, but both sides appear keen to go beyond it, exploring new pathways for cooperation in an increasingly competitive global market.
Can India-Japan ties move beyond economics to strategic cooperation?
There is a growing recognition that the partnership must extend beyond trade. Rajya Sabha MP Harsh Vardhan Shringla had an interaction with Kobayashi and other Japanese lawmakers on Sunday (May 3, 2026), which highlighted the potential for deeper collaboration in defence, energy, and investments.
Shringla’s emphasis on taking the relationship “to the next level” reflects a broader strategic ambition. As both countries navigate an evolving security landscape in the Indo-Pacific, closer defence ties and joint initiatives in third countries are becoming increasingly relevant. Energy cooperation and people-to-people exchanges are also emerging as critical pillars of the relationship.
The meeting was also attended by BJP MPs Arun Singh, Tejasvi Surya and Alok Sharma. Shringla thanked Japanese Ambassador to India Ono Keiichi for facilitating the interaction. “I thank Ono Keiichi, Ambassador of Japan to India, for arranging this very useful interaction,” he said.
During the discussions, Shringla emphasised the strength of India-Japan relations and the growing political momentum to expand cooperation.
“During the discussion, I spoke about our close ties with Japan and the potential to take this partnership to the next level, given the strong political will that exists today,” he stated.
