India, Bangladesh border forces to meet in Delhi for DG-level talks amid migration concerns

Undocumented migration is likely to be a key issue during the talks. Over 4,000 undocumented migrants were caught along the India-Bangladesh border in 2025, with the trend continuing this year.

New Delhi: Senior officials of the Border Security Force (BSF) and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) will hold their 57th Director General-Level Border Conference in New Delhi from June 8 to 11. This is the first such meeting since the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP)-led government under prime minister Tarique Rahman took office.

The talks will also be the first DG-level engagement between the two border forces since the BJP formed the government in West Bengal. Border security, cross-border crime, smuggling, coordination mechanisms and migration-related concerns are expected to feature prominently during the discussions.

According to a statement issued by BGB, a 15-member Bangladeshi delegation led by its director general, Major General Mohammad Ashrafuzzaman Siddiqui, will participate in the four-day conference. The delegation will include officials from Bangladesh’s prime minister’s office, the ministries of home affairs, foreign affairs and shipping, along with representatives from the department of land records and surveys and the joint rivers commission.

The Indian delegation will be headed by the BSF director general and include senior officials associated with border management and security.

The issue of undocumented migrants is likely to be raised during the talks. The matter has remained a key concern for Indian authorities amid continued attempts at illegal cross-border movement.

According to the reports more than 4,000 undocumented migrants were apprehended along the India-Bangladesh border while attempting to leave India in 2025. The trend has continued in recent months, making migration management one of the important subjects expected to be discussed during the conference.

The biannual DG-level talks serve as a key platform for both countries to review the border situation, address operational challenges and strengthen cooperation between the two border-guarding forces.
