New Delhi: A tanker was hit by multiple projectiles off the northern coast of Qatar, leaving a number of casualties, in a fresh escalation of attacks on commercial vessels in the Gulf. The incident was reported by the United Kingdom maritime trade operations (UKMTO) on Wednesday after the vessel came under attack around 51 nautical miles north of Madinat ash Shamal.

UKMTO said the tanker was hit by several projectiles at around 1900 UTC on Wednesday. The agency did not provide more details on the number of casualties or identify the vessel, while authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.

The attack is significant because it took place in the western part of the Gulf, away from the Strait of Hormuz, where most recent attacks on commercial shipping have been concentrated. It also comes amid a broader rise in maritime incidents linked to the continuing conflict involving Iran, the United States and Israel.

The latest incident adds to growing concerns over the safety of commercial shipping across the Gulf and the wider region.

The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most important energy routes, carrying a major share of global crude oil and liquefied natural gas supplies. Any expansion of attacks beyond the narrow waterway could therefore increase risks for shipping, energy markets and countries dependent on Gulf exports.

The maritime tensions are also unfolding as Washington prepares for the possibility of renewed military action against Iran. The Pentagon has instructed US central command to complete preparations for major combat operations, according to US officials cited by Axios, although no decision has been taken on whether or when a new US operation will begin.

The prospect of renewed strikes has gained added importance with the US midterm elections approaching on November 3. While stronger military action could increase pressure on Iran, a wider conflict could also disrupt energy supplies, push oil prices higher and create economic and political pressure on the United Sates resident, Donald Trump, ahead of the midterm elections.

US and Israeli officials have indicated that military action could potentially take place before the elections, although an Israeli official has said the chances of such a move before the vote are not high. Possible targets have reportedly included Iranian energy infrastructure and nuclear-related sites, but no fresh operation has been officially announced.

For commercial shipping, however, the latest tanker attack highlights the risks already emerging before any new US military action is announced. A renewed confrontation with Iran could trigger further attacks on vessels or US-linked targets across the region, raising the possibility of a broader escalation and putting additional pressure on an already vulnerable Gulf shipping network.
