Story: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Thursday (May 14, 2026), met with several BRICS nations’ foreign ministers in New Delhi, including those from Russia, Iran, South Africa, and Brazil.
On the sidelines of the BRICS Foreign Ministers Meeting, Modi joined the visiting ministers and delegates for a photo.
Modi met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, South African Foreign Minister Ronald Lamola, and Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira.
During his meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, Modi said India continues to support peaceful solutions to the conflicts in Ukraine and West Asia.
On X, Modi thanked Lavrov for sharing an update on the progress across the facets of the Special and Privileged Partnership between New Delhi and Moscow.
The Prime Minister’s Office said Lavrov briefed Modi on the progress achieved in bilateral cooperation since the meeting of the two leaders in December 2025 for the 23rd India-Russia Annual Summit.
The leaders also exchanged views on several of the pressing geopolitical concerns, including Ukraine and West Asia. He reaffirmed the consistent support for a peaceful resolution.
“We also exchanged views on various regional and global issues, including the situation in Ukraine and West Asia. Reiterated our consistent support for efforts aimed at peaceful resolution of conflicts,” Modi said.
The Prime Minister’s Office noted that Modi requested Lavrov to convey his warm greetings to President Putin.
Meanwhile, Iran urged BRICS nations to explicitly condemn the US and Israel over what it described as attacks on its sovereignty.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi told the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting that Western powers were pushing the world towards instability and conflict.
Addressing the high-level gathering, Araghchi said BRICS must take “concrete action” against what he termed violations of international law and the politicisation of global institutions by Western powers.
“Iran, therefore, calls upon BRICS member states and all responsible members of the international community to explicitly condemn violations of international law by the United States and Israel, including their illegal aggression against Iran, a member of BRICS,” Araghchi said.
He accused Washington and Tel Aviv of pursuing “illegal expansionism and warmongering,” claiming Iran had twice been subjected to attacks within less than a year based on “false claims,” contradicting assessments of the International Atomic Energy Agency and even the US intelligence community.
Without detailing the specific incidents, the Iranian minister said Tehran had become the victim of coercive geopolitics and warned that instability in West Asia was damaging not only the region but also global economic interests.
“Regional instability is a lose-lose proposition for all sides, including the aggressors,” he said.
Positioning Iran’s confrontation with the West as part of a larger ideological struggle, Araghchi said Tehran’s resistance represented “the battle in defence of all of us, of the new world that we are building together.”
The Iranian foreign minister accused Western capitals of enabling “genocide,” violating the sovereignty of nations, and practising “state piracy on the high seas.”
He argued that such actions persisted because of a “sense of impunity” that needed to be collectively challenged by BRICS nations.
Meanwhile, Chinese Ambassador to India, Fu Xeihong, attended the BRICS Foreign Minister’s Meeting on behalf of Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and underlined how China attached great importance to the BRICS cooperation.
“BRICS is an important platform for cooperation among emerging markets and developing countries. China attaches great importance to BRICS cooperation,” Fu said on X.
“We stand ready to support India in making the FMM a full success, and advance the high-quality development of greater BRICS cooperation,” the Chinese Ambassador said.
