New Delhi: The US ambassador to India, Sergio Gor, has rejected a report linking him to some of Washington’s most powerful jobs, including secretary of state, as speculation grows over personnel changes in the administration of the US president, Donald Trump. The report places a diplomat closely associated with India-US relations at the centre of the succession debate, although no appointment or departure involving the officials concerned has been announced.
On Wednesday, the Washington Sun reported, citing 10 people familiar with internal discussions, that Gor’s name had surfaced for senior positions following the Republicans’ midterm election debacle. The possibilities included succeeding the secretary of state, Marco Rubio, or the White House chief of staff, Susie Wiles, with a senior state department assignment also mentioned.
Gor categorically denied seeking a different assignment, describing Rubio as “irreplaceable” and saying: “I have zero interest in any other role.” He also denied discussing a move with anyone, challenging the report’s central suggestion that he was preparing for promotion.
Denials extend beyond Gor
The state department’s assistant secretary for global public affairs, Dylan Johnson, rejected the claims and emphasized Gor’s close working and personal relationship with Rubio. A White House official likewise dismissed the report, saying Gor supported both Rubio and Wiles in their current positions.
In an update added after publication, the deputy secretary of state, Christopher Landau, also denied intending to leave his post. His response followed the newspaper’s account of an alleged remark linking his possible departure to the election outcome and the prospect of congressional investigations.
Neither Rubio nor Wiles has publicly indicated an intention to step down, while suggestions that Rubio might eventually leave to prepare for another presidential campaign remain unconfirmed.
The relationship behind Gor’s influence
Gor’s connection with Trump predates his diplomatic assignment and rests partly on his role in building the administration’s political team. Trump publicly credited him with helping the 2024 election campaign and subsequently directing the recruitment of thousands of government appointees.
Trump also referred to Gor’s publishing business, which had published his work, illustrating a relationship extending beyond government service. That combination of political staffing experience and personal familiarity helps explain why Gor attracts attention whenever senior administration positions come under discussion, although it does not establish that a move is planned.
His responsibilities already extend beyond the embassy in New Delhi through his additional appointment as special envoy for South and Central Asia. At the same ceremony, Trump outlined a brief encompassing investment, technology, American energy exports and security cooperation, alongside engagement with Central Asian governments.
Why the speculation matters for India
For New Delhi, the practical significance lies in Gor’s ability to connect bilateral diplomacy with decision-making in Washington. His public appearances with Rubio also provide evidence of their working relationship: the two gave a joint interview in Mumbai on October 22, 2026, discussing trade negotiations and wider cooperation.
In that interview, Rubio identified completing a trade agreement as a priority because it would provide greater certainty for both countries. He also highlighted energy, artificial intelligence, telecommunications and pharmaceuticals, while Gor pointed to engagement across commerce, technology and military exercises.
Rubio said only a small number of negotiating issues remained, but declined to disclose details before an agreement was finalized. Those remarks reflected optimism about the negotiations at that stage, rather than confirmation that a deal had been concluded.
The broader relationship has required careful management of commercial and strategic disagreements, including Washington’s objections to Indian purchases of Russian oil. An AP report earlier this year described how those tensions and Indian concerns over protecting farmers and domestic industries had complicated trade negotiations even as both governments sought continued cooperation.
Against that background, any eventual change in the ambassador’s assignment would draw close attention in India because of the relationships and negotiations attached to the post. For now, however, the available reporting establishes a disputed succession story, with Gor explicitly maintaining that he wants to continue in his present role.
