A defence research lab, on Sunday (May 31, 2026), conducted a successful test of a ‘high-calibre’ bomb, meant for air force payload use.
The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) lab carried out the test at its Ramgarh facility near Chandigarh, about 350 km from New Delhi.
The Terminal Ballistics Research Laboratory (TBRL) conducted the test amidst tight security arrangements and strict adherence to established safety protocols.
Such trials of explosives were carried out by TBRL on several previous occasions, too, and the explosion at the test range was heard several kilometres away.
The test was carried out in the presence of senior Indian Air Force (IAF) officers, who wanted to validate the warhead’s effectiveness for use as a payload on their aircraft, it is learned.
TBRL, a DRDO establishment under its armaments cluster, is engaged in the ballistics evaluation of warheads and projectiles. It conducts research in the fields of high explosives, detonics, shock waves, and assessing the terminal effects of ammunition, and is also involved in evolving data and design parameters for new armaments.
