New Delhi: The Army chief, General Dhiraj Seth, reviewed the security situation in Manipur and assessed the readiness of military formations deployed across the Eastern Theatre during a two-day visit on Tuesday and Wednesday. Alongside evaluating operational preparedness, he also examined the Indian Army’s ongoing flood relief efforts in the northeast, where troops continue to assist civil authorities in affected areas.
The inspection included the formations that were tasked with the responsibility of providing security to Manipur, apart from other operational sectors of the region. The senior commanders apprised Gen Dhiraj Seth of the existing security scenario, and steps being taken to ensure that there is stability. He was also updated about the rescue and relief operations taking place in flood affected areas where the Army was actively working with the local administration and civilians.
Gen Seth, during his tour, interacted with the Army men deployed in the operational sector and discussed the issues faced by them while carrying out their security duties as well as helping in natural disasters. He appreciated their efforts towards providing stability in the security situation and giving help in natural disasters.
Moreover, the Army chief inspected various schemes that would increase the cooperation of security forces with locals. They informed him about different programs that were being conducted in the region.
As part of the visit, Gen Seth attended the opening ceremony of the Imphal leg of the 135th Indian Oil Durand Cup at Khuman Lampak Main Stadium. The event was attended by the Manipur governor, Ajay Kumar Bhalla; chief minister, Yumnam Khemchand Singh; and senior civil and military officials. Widely regarded as one of Asia’s oldest football tournaments, the Durand Cup has become an important sporting event in the northeast, where football enjoys a strong following.
Participation in this tournament by the Army shows its ongoing attempts at getting connected with youngsters through the means of sports and building its connection within the community in the region. The Army’s visit was part of the ongoing effort of securing Manipur and providing humanitarian aid to those affected by the floods.
